The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.
Video review technology will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.
Competitors are granted the right to challenge certain calls made by the official, echoing the protocol currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This move arrives only a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to review specific decisions, including:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Possible hindrance end of a point.
Importantly, there is no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can request.
Case in Point
An illustrative incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire viewed a video and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.
Further Updates
Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.
In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
